The writing skill is very important in teaching and learning process especially for those studying in Elementary school. In elementary school setting, the writing skill has been taught since students are in the first grade. After they reach the fourth grade, students are supposed to be able to write well; however, the reality shows that their writing skill is still poor. The average score of students writing of fourth grade students in Mataram Elementary school grade four in the first semester shows that those reaching the competence standard 70 is only 14 persons out of 36 students (38% from the overall students). One of the reasons of this happening is that teachers are not motivated in choosing and using the enjoyable teaching strategy for students to learn to write.

To overcome this problem, we then choose one of the effective strategy to motivate students to write that by using the mind mapping strategy. The teaching of writing by using the mind mapping strategy is focused on the process of writing which involve four stages; they are: suggesting idea, developing idea, writing, and publishing. This strategy is chosen due to the fact that based on the theory and from the result of the preliminary study then we can take a conclusion that this strategy can really help students to improve their language skill since up to now there have been no study on this topic especially those intended to help students in writing a story. This strategy is intended to apply theory on using an enjoyable way to develop the knowledge and experience in the form of writing.

To conduct the mind mapping strategy in improving students ability to write a story of fourth grade students of elementary school of Mataram 11, the research problem is formulated as follows,” how is the process and the implementation of mind mapping strategy in improving the students ability of fourth grade students of elementary school in Mataram 11 in the stage of suggesting idea, developing idea, writing, and publishing.

To answer all those problems, we then use a qualitative approach with a classroom action research design. In its application, the action is given to all students of Mataram 11 elementary school. However, the result of the analysis is focused to nine students who are randomly selected out of 36 studnets of fourth grade students of Mataram 11 elementary school. The main instrument in collecting the data is the writer herself assisted by by a collaborator teacher by using the observation sheet, interview guidelines, and writing test. The criteria of success in this teaching and learning process of writing skill is about 75% to which students can get the competency standard about 70 in their grade.

The result of the study shows that in writing skill, the mind mapping strategy can really helpful in improving the students writing in story writing of those students in fourth grade of Mataram 11 elementary school. From its process and product, the process of improving students writing story is in the form of the improvement on students’ motivation to follow the teaching and learning process. The improvement process in suggesting the idea is done by: a teacher explain some pictures, so that he or she can really direct students attention to observe and express the students idea, and ask students opinion about those pictures and ask them to choose one of the pictures to assist them in idea development, then teacher will direct them to that picture and ask the reasons and some question why choosing that picture. The process of idea development is done by asking students to write their main ideas on a piece of paper on their working sheets paper which then it is colored. Besides that, it is done by telling related interesting stories from the main ideas and which students then asked to write their idea on their working sheets and form some branched lines (the non-linier lines) on the main ideas, forming some keywords downward based on the mind mapping made, developing some keywords into some sentences, and arrange those sentences in such a way that it will be a paragraph and an essay, revising the draft in peer group checking, rewriting the revision stage. The publishing process in done by directing students to be really skillful in reading that essay by considering its pronunciation, intonation, and appropriate expression meanwhile other students will give comments and suggestion, asking students to display their writing on the school wall newspaper in return started from the best essay.

The result of the mind mapping strategy in improving students of fourth grade of Mataram 11 elementary school is significant enough. In the stage of idea suggesting, there are 46 students able to show their ideas (Cycle I) and it improves into 100% (cycle II0. in the stage of idea development there are 60 % students are able to develop their ideas and increases into 98% (cycle II). In the writing stage there are 58% (cycle I) of those able to write a story from their idea and it then improves into 85% (cycle II). In the publishing stage, there are 59% (cycle I) students are able to publish their writing well and it then increases into 81% (Cycle II). It then concluded that the average score of students writing in the first cycle is about 64.7% (average), it improves into 81.8% in second cycle (very good).

Based on the result of this study, it is then suggested some suggestions for the sake of the future researchers. First, to the school principals to give many chances to teachers who want to apply the mind mapping strategy in the skill of writing a story. Secondly, to those teachers teaching in elementary school, this result of the study can be used as one of the alternatives of teaching strategy which the can be applied in writing a story which then can also be applied in other skill. Thirdly, to the future researchers, it is suggested to conduct other researchers in other topic which still uses the mind mapping strategy to increase students’ fluency in using Bahasa Indonesia skillfully.
