Abstract

Number is one of the materials in mathematics and is often used in daily life. Integer is a kind of numbers taught in the elementary school. The ability of the grade IV students SDN Nglateng 01 in doing addition and subtraction the integers was still low. The low ability of the students in doing addition and subtraction of integers was because the conventional learning strategy used by the teacher. That conventional learning did not give opportunities to the students to construct their knowledge themselves. The teacher did not use any media in the learning process. The teacher gave explanation directly about the material, giving examples and exercises so that the students just memorized and did a procedural works. Besides the students was not given opportunities to apply the concept of integers in daily life. Therefore, it is necessary to create a learning condition which can help the students to manipulate in the learning of addition and subtraction of the integers.

This study aimed to (1) describe the learning plans of the addition and subtraction of integer by using manipulative materials which is used to help the students to learn about addition and subtraction of integers for the grade IV students of SDN Nglateng 01 Kenduran subdistrict Tuban district, (2) describe the implementation of the lesson plan of the addition and subtraction of integers by using the manipulative materials, (3) describe the students understanding in learning the addition and subtraction the integers by using the manipulative materials.

To achieve those objectives, the researcher planned to do a classroom action research which was implemented for the grade IV students in SDN Nglateng 01 Kenduran Subdistrict Tuban Regency. The research data were obtained from the pre-test and the post-test, the observation result got during the teaching and learning process between students and teacher and the interview result.

This study was implemented in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of four phases those were planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The implementation of learning plans by using the different manipulative material which followed Brunner theory those are: (1) in cycle 1, the researcher implemented the addition and subtraction of integer by using manipulative material in the form of integer chips made from carton (enactive phase); (2) in cycle II the learning of the addition and subtraction of integer was done by using the manipulative material that is line number (iconic phase); (3) in cycle III the learning process of the addition and subtraction of integer was done without using the manipulative material (symbolic phase).

The research finding got from the learning of the addition and subtraction of the integers in cycle I, II, and III showed that there was an improvement of the studentsí achievement those were 90.10%, 90.10% and 95.5%. Respectively based on the research findings, the researcher expected cases as follows: (1) the teacher should accustom the students to learn in group. Accordingly, the students can interacting each other, discuss, and help each other, (2) in the learning plans the teacher should pay attention on the time management so that lesson earn effective. (3) study with materials media of manipulative proven can improve the understanding of student. In consequence require to exercise and innovate in designing study by using materials media of manipulative.
